This article points out some of the ongoing changes regarding AP curriculum access in the US, and also how AP results can be used in lieu of SAT results at some universities as well. While I applaud the efforts of any student to get access to challenging coursework that can advance their university applications, one issue that is not discussed is the amount of time, effort, and motivation students need for the self-study of any AP course. I have worked with several students over the years that have succeeded with AP self-study, but also many that have not and simply could not complete what they took on for a variety of reasons. A common thread among the students that found success with self-study was access to tutoring to replace the traditional support they would normally have in a classroom setting, and this adds another challenge to the access puzzle.
