Canadian universities are reporting a sharp rise in applications from U.S. students—some up over 50%—as growing numbers look for stability and predictability under President Trump’s second term.

As The Guardian reports, the motivation isn’t just academic. Many American students are expressing concern about the political climate at home and uncertainty over future education policies and visa processes. For some, Canada offers a sense of reassurance: strong institutions, cultural familiarity, and fewer unknowns.

As an international college counselor, I don’t see this as a rejection of elite U.S. universities—many students still prioritize rankings and reputation. But it’s clear that some families are expanding their options and weighing trade-offs they might not have considered before.

This moment isn’t just about where students can get in—it’s about where they feel they can count on finishing what they start.
