With the students I work with, I constantly emphasize the importance of authenticity in college applications. A recent piece in the New York Times highlights a concerning trend where students are pushed to brand themselves from as early as middle school. It’s vital to remember that young people evolve significantly from middle school to university. Trying to fit a predetermined mold can feel inauthentic and create undue pressure. I’ve heard from many former students who felt like “frauds” under such guidance, pressured to portray someone they aren’t. Let’s encourage our students to showcase their unique qualities and skills genuinely, ensuring their true selves shine through in their applications!
