Canada is one of several countries that are scaling back international student numbers, announcing study permit caps, and tightening oversight of post-secondary programs.
According to “University Affairs”, international enrolment in Canada has surged over 200% in the past decade, raising concerns about housing, labor market alignment, access to services, and immigration backlogs. In response, the government implemented changes, but largely without consulting the universities and colleges impacted. This has led to programs being cancelled, budget turmoil, and calls for discussions and a coordinated plan involving all steak holders to deal with the situation.
Institutions stress that international students are welcome in Canada and remain concerned that because of cutbacks, students and families are hearing the opposite.
