I fully support New York’s proposed ban on legacy admissions. This practice unfairly favours privileged applicants – for example, legacy applications made up only 5% of applicants at Harvard, but received 30% of admissions slots. This article poignantly argues that “legacy admission is simply affirmative action for privileged kids”. Every applicant deserves an equal review based on merit. Additionally, I would advocate for the reconsidering of tax laws that allow substantial donations to schools. If donations had to take place anonymously, any potential influence on admission outcomes could be removed. It’s time for a more equitable admissions process.
