If any counsellor, parent, or student needs more evidence as to why range of selectivity is needed now more than ever in university applications, this article should be mandatory reading. It highlights much of what people witnessed during the pandemic when application numbers to selective schools skyrocketed with standardized tests out of the mix, to more recent issues like the impact of FAFSA filing challenges, the end of race-based affirmative action, and the rise in reported median test scores with test optional policies. When dealing with parents and students experiencing the application process, one of the topics that is most discussed is the need for range, even when a student’s profile is quite strong, and this article could be very helpful as a wake up call when the proposed list of schools makes my blood pressure go up a few notches!
