The quest for admission into ‘good’ universities has taken a concerning turn, with the definition of ‘good’ narrowing alarmingly. As a parent and college counsellor, I’ve witnessed the lengths to which some will go for admission, including unethical actions that betray the essence of education. A colleague’s experience with parents attempting to steal SAT exams underlines this issue starkly, highlighting a misplaced sense of parental duty. There’s a rich tapestry of excellent colleges and universities worldwide, far beyond those few names constantly echoed. It’s crucial for students and parents to delve deeper, looking beyond rankings and prestige to find a school that truly fits the student’s needs and aspirations. This approach not only promotes integrity but also broadens the horizon of opportunities, steering clear of the toxic competition for a narrow slice of perceived excellence.
