Some of My Favorite Podcasts and Blogs to Help You with the College Search
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the number of university options out there, especially in the US, you’re not alone. With over 4,000 colleges and universities to choose from in the US alone, and well over 20,000 globally, the process can feel confusing, stressful, and even a bit chaotic. That’s why I often recommend listening to a few trusted voices who break it all down in clear, helpful ways.
As a college counselor working with international students applying to schools in the US, UK, Netherlands, and Canada, I know how noisy the admissions world can be. Everyone seems to have an opinion, but not everyone has real knowledge. So today, I’m sharing some of my favorite podcasts and blogs that offer solid advice, expert insight, and real-life tips that can actually make your journey smoother.
1. Admissions Beat – Hosted by Lee Coffin
Lee Coffin is the Dean of Admissions at Dartmouth College, and he brings in a wide range of guests—college counselors, admissions officers, and more. This podcast is great for students, parents, and mentors who want to understand the big picture of how admissions works. It covers every step of the journey, from researching schools to writing essays. The episodes are easy to follow, even if you’re new to the process.
Why I like it: You get real information, not just opinions. It’s thoughtful, useful, and smart without being hard to understand.
2. Admitted-ish – Blog by Mary O’Malley on Substack
If you want honesty with a touch of humor, this is the one. Mary O’Malley keeps it real about the ups and downs of applying to college. She talks about the emotional side of the process, something not many others do. You’ll find stories, advice, and a reality check when you need it most.
Why I like it: It’s like talking to a smart older sister who’s been through it all and doesn’t sugarcoat anything. She’ll make you laugh and think at the same time.
3. The College Admissions Process Podcast – Hosted by John Durante
Every week, John Durante interviews admissions experts from a wide variety of colleges, from Ivy League schools to community colleges and everything in between. If you’re trying to figure out which school could be the right fit for you, this podcast gives you an inside look.
Why I like it: You get to hear straight from the people who know each school best. It’s not about rankings, it’s about fit.
4. Your College Bound Kid – Hosted by Mark Stucker
This podcast is updated twice a week and dives into real questions from parents and students. It covers everything from athletic recruiting to how AI is changing admissions. There are even episodes on whether or not families should hire private counselors.
Why I like it: It’s full of variety and stays current with what’s happening in admissions. The hosts are also very parent-friendly and explain things in a way that makes sense.
Final Thoughts
There’s a lot of information out there about applying to university. But more information isn’t always better. It’s about finding the right sources that help you feel less stressed, more confident, and more informed.
These podcasts and blogs are some of my go-to resources when I want students and families to hear from experts who truly know what they’re talking about. Whether you’re just starting your search or deep into the application season, these voices can guide you through the noise.
